Loss of muscle mass

What is loss of muscle mass?

Loss of muscle mass, known as muscle atrophy or sarcopenia, occurs when muscle fibers shrink and strength declines due to aging or inadequate physical activity. This common condition can start as early as age 30 and accelerate after 50.

Contributing factors include poor nutrition, chronic illnesses, and hormonal changes. As we get older, levels of growth hormones and testosterone naturally decline, allowing fat and connective tissue to gradually replace lean muscle over time. Inactivity also weakens our muscles, as human bodies are designed to move. "Use it or lose it" is an apt expression when it comes to maintaining muscle as we age.

Signs of muscle loss include feeling physically weaker, fatigue, falls or fractures, weight gain despite eating less, and simply noticing slimmer arms or legs in the mirror. Measuring waist size and grip strength can provide objective data as well.

To combat age-related muscle loss, doctors recommend strength training with weights 2-3x per week along with getting enough protein and vitamins through whole foods or supplements if needed. Even light yoga helps by moving the body through full ranges of motion.

If weakness and wasting seem excessive, get checked for overlooked conditions that accelerate muscle loss, like low testosterone or thyroid dysfunction in men and women or uncontrolled diabetes. Balance Health Clinic offers comprehensive hormone testing and evidence-based treatment plans to address hormonal imbalances that contribute to sarcopenia. Their healthcare professionals can determine if hormone therapy is appropriate for your needs through lab testing and examination.

While some muscle loss is inevitable with aging, staying active provides huge benefits for strength, fitness and function. Speak to your doctor if you're concerned about rapid muscle wasting, fatigue or weakness that hinders daily activities. Maintaining lean muscle keeps us vibrant and independent as we age. With sensible nutrition, activity and early medical care if needed, we can slow muscle loss substantially. Balance Health Clinic has specialized experience with preserving muscle integrity through optimized hormone balance.
